Spring could bring area heavy snow or thunderstorms
I hope all of you enjoyed the weekend weather. We had great weather on Saturday all over the state. Many locations warmed-up into the low to mid 70s and experienced record high temperatures. By Saturday night, however, a cold front pushed through the area and temperatures dropped dramatically.
Sunday morning, for example, Alexandria dropped to 30 degrees that morning after having a high on Saturday of 71 degrees. That's a temperatures swing of 41 degrees in less than 24 hours. Normally, we see a temperature swing of 15 degrees this time of the year as highs are now around 41 degrees after a normal low of 26 degrees.
Monday, we had a mixed bag of weather across the Midwest. We had strong winds, cooler temperatures, a red flag warning due to concerns over wildfires breaking-out, freezing rain in parts of Wisconsin, and some showers and thunderstorms Monday night in Minnesota.
It's that time of the year when we can have heavy snow or thunderstorms; or we can have temperatures below zero or record high temperatures in the 70s and 80s. March is that transitional month when we go from winter to spring. As we saw last week in Elysian, we can even have tornadoes in Minnesota in March. That tornado in southern Minnesota was the second earliest tornado in the state.
It is also a time of the year for breezy conditions. Look for the winds to be breezy for much of the week and into this coming week. Temperatures will remain above average for much of the forecast period!
Have a great rest of the week!
In 1924 a late season winter storm hit southern Minnesota where over two feet of snow fell!
