Soldiers' names sought
Park Rapids Minnesota PO Box 111 56470

The Blue Star Mothers are gearing up to send care packages to deployed troops for the holidays.

The organization is looking for names of deployed soldiers. If someone has not been contacted this year about adding a son or daughter to the list, contact Connie Carmichael at 252-0086.

The Blue Star Mothers plan to pack boxes on Saturday, Nov. 17. Details of the packaging event are not finalized but for now Carmichael would like to finish compiling the list of names.

Blue Star Mothers has fundraisers during the year and the money is used to send the care packages, which include snacks, pillow cases, cards, spoons and forks, hats and toiletries.

The Northwoods Chapter of Blue Star Mothers has members from around the area, including Detroit Lakes, Cass Lake, Nevis and Park Rapids.

Members of the group support each other along with families who have loved ones in the military.

Monetary donations are needed to pay for shipping of the boxes as well. Other welcome donations include beef jerky, shaving cream, playing cards or other simple, everyday items.

The Northwoods Chapter has a variety of members. Some have children currently deployed and others do not.

Also, many husbands are involved in the group as well. It's becoming a family group rather than just mothers. Friends are also welcome.

Blue Star Mothers display a blue star on a banner for each child in uniform. The stars, typically hung in front windows of their homes, change to gold if a son or daughter dies in military service.

The Blue Star Flags have long been a part of wartime history. They have been hung in the family's windows of service men and women since World War I. These banners first became a way for households to indicate they have family members in service in 1917.

For more information about the Blue Star Mothers, to join or to donate, call Carmichael at 252-0086. The Blue Star Mothers mailing address is PO Box 734, Park Rapids, MN 56470.
