Snow, slippery roads start holiday travel; conditions will improve

If you're traveling to Grandmother's house for Thanksgiving, a late start may not be a bad idea.

At 7 a.m. roads in Hubbard County were slippery with an accumulation of snow, making travel slow. Authorities responded to numerous accidents caused by poor road conditions. Hubbard County road crews were out shortly after 8 a.m. sanding and salting the worst highways.

The driver of a vehicle that rolled on County Road 40 north of Park Rapids - the area's sixth such rollover this month - was not seriously injured when his car missed an icy curve and plunged off the steep shoulder, overturning.

The occupants of two vehicles were not injured when their cars collided near Fort Benedict Wednesday morning near County Roads 38 and 39.

"After today things dry up nicely," said National Weather Service meteorologist Jim Kaiser. "Thanksgiving should be a good travel day."

Snows will end by noon today, Kaiser said. With the sun coming out, it will quickly melt the snow.

"The ground is not all that cold" so the snow won't stick around, Kaiser said.

As for Sunday, another late start home might be wise as well. Morning snows and conditions such as today will be present throughout the region, Kaiser said.

In Hubbard County highways 71 and 34 were in fair condition. Lesser traveled roadways were in poor shape.
