Smythe advances to boys swim meet in 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke

     Connor Smythe capped off his senior season by earning another trip to the state Class A boys swimming meet.

     The Park Rapids senior qualified in two events by placing second in the 100-yard backstroke by breaking his own school record with a time of 56.19 and placing third in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.23 at Saturday’s Section 5A meet at Alexandria. Smythe’s previous best in the 100 backstroke was a 56.21 set last season.

     Smythe will open the state meet with preliminaries in both events Friday at noon at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. The top-16 finishers in each event qualify for Saturday’s finals.

     While Smythe led the way with two state berths, the Panthers had 12 other individuals score points during Saturday’s finals of the section meet.

     The Panthers scored points in every event in finishing sixth with 237 points. Fergus Falls claimed the team title with 390 points while Alexandria was second with 361 points. Detroit Lakes finished fourth with 258 points and Perham was seventh with 151 points.

Panthers click in preliminaries

     The Panthers clicked during Friday’s preliminaries by clocking 30 season-best times.

     Smythe, Kalvin Hagan, Spencer Adolphson and Matt Konshok opened preliminaries by placing fifth in the 200 medley relay in 1:48.04. Smythe went 26.32 in the backstroke, Hagan clocked a 30.66 in the breaststroke, Adolphson had a 27.08 split in the butterfly and Konshok anchored with a 23.98 in the freestyle. Fergus Falls took first in 1:42.32.

     In the 200 freestyle, Matthew Benson reached the consolation finals by placing ninth in 1:59.92. Zach Behrens finished 19th in 2:08.24, Iain Wallace was 23rd in 2:14.28 and Sam Eystad finished 24th in 2:14.90. Fergus Falls’ Cal Mouritsen had the fastest time of 1:51.65.

     Alexandria’s Mark Kallevig led the field in the 200 individual medley with a 2:08.27 while Adolphson (11th in 2:21.01) and Casmir Simonson (15th in 2:27.68) advanced to the consolation finals. Samuel Huot was 21st in 2:34.40 and Bradley Graham took 22nd in 2:37.03.

     Konshok qualified for the finals in the 50 freestyle by placing eighth in 23.47 while Kurt Fritze qualified for the consolation finals by placing ninth in 23.48. Spencer Fritze finished 17th in 25.11. Detroit Lakes’ Austin McCullough led the way with a 22.90.

     In diving, Hagan was sixth after preliminaries with 148.55 points while Breitweser (ninth with 129.90), Kurt Fritze (12th with 116.45) and Spencer Fritze (17th with 95.95) followed. After the semifinals, Hagan was seventh with 239.05, Breitweser was eighth with 220.95, Kurt Fritze was 15th with 179.55 and Spencer Fritze was 16th with 171.70. Fergus Falls’ Reid Magnuson led the pack with 342.45 points.

     Adolphson (ninth in 1:01.54) and Huot (15th in 1:07.28) qualified for the consolation finals in the 100 butterfly while Andrew Zinke was 21st in 1:12.20. Fergus Falls’ Joe Kitzman clocked the fastest time with a 54.80.

     Smythe put himself in position to qualify for state in the 100 freestyle by clocking a 50.62 for third place during preliminaries. Konshok advanced to the consolation finals with a 53.62 for 14th place while Behrens (19th in 55.64) and Hunter Utke (21st in 56.44) just missed advancing. Mouritsen had the fastest preliminary time of 49.33.

     In the 500 freestyle, Benson finished fourth in 5:25.17 and Graham was ninth in 5:40.83 to qualify for the finals. Wallace took 18th in 6:15.91 and Eystad was 19th in 6:19.29. Perham’s Jayden Cullen led the way with a 5:16.77.

     Melrose/Sauk Centre clocked a 1:34.40 for first place while Kurt Fritze (with a 23.89 split), Smythe (24.06), Spencer Fritze (24.77) and Konshok (23.10) clocked a 1:35.82 for the Panthers for fourth place in the 200 freestyle relay.

     Smythe’s runner-up 56.56 trailed only the 56.01 by Kitzman in the 100 backstroke. Tyler Breitweser finished 10th in 1:03.51 and Simonson was 12th in 1:04.41 to qualify for the consolation finals while Tim Walsh took 18th in 1:09.59.

     Bemidji’s Tyler Hemp had the fastest time of 1:01.27 while Hagan took eighth in 1:09.35 in the 100 breaststroke. Utke finished 14th in 1:11.89 to qualify for the consolation finals while Calvin Bateman took 17th in 1:14.69 and Isaac Overmyer was 19th in 1:16.41.

     Fergus Falls led the way in the 400 freestyle relay with a 3:24.19 while Kurt Fritze (with a split of 53.30), Adolphson (57.41), Behrens (56.56) and Benson (54.21) led the Panthers to a 3:41.48 for seventh place.

Panthers solid in finals

     Having Smythe qualify for state in two events highlighted Saturday’s finals as the Panthers posted 10 faster times.

     Smythe (with a 26.46 in the backstroke), Hagan (with a 30.15 in the breaststroke), Adolphson (with a 26.31 in the butterfly) and Konshok (with a 23.30 in the freestyle) finished fifth in the 200 medley relay with a 1:46.22 for 28 points. Fergus Falls took first in 1:39.95.

     Benson scored 6 points by placing 11th in the 200 freestyle in 2:00.09. Mouritsen was first in 1:46.23.

     The Panthers scored 7 points in the 200 individual medley when Adolphson finished 11th in 2:20.06 and Simonson was 16th in 2:29.68. Kallevig won the section title in 2:03.59.

     Konshok finished eighth in 23.82 and Kurt Fritze was 11th in 23.74 as the Panthers scored 17 points in the 50 freestyle. Jacobson led the way with a 22.44.

     Park Rapids scored 30 points in diving as Hagan took sixth with 333.95, Breitweser was seventh with 291.35, Kurt Fritze was 14th with 249.20 and Spencer Fritze was 15th with 247.60. Magnuson took first with 498.45 points.

     Adolphson’s 1:02.01 for ninth place and Huot’s 1:08.76 for 15th place gave the Panthers 11 points in the 100 butterfly. Kitzman won the section title in 52.88.

     Smythe claimed the final state berth in the 100 freestyle by placing third in 50.23. Konshok finished 14th in 53.02 as the Panthers scored 19 points in that event. Mouritsen led the way with a 46.78.

     Benson just missed advancing to state by placing fourth in the 500 freestyle with a 5:23.55. Graham finished 12th in 5:41.04 to give the Panthers 20 points in that race. Melrose’s Ben Heller was first in 5:09.50.

     Kurt Fritze (with a 23.83 split), Smythe (23.57), Spencer Fritze (24.42) and Konshok (22.54) teamed for a 1:34.36 for fifth place in the 200 freestyle relay to add 28 points to the Panthers’ team score. Fergus Falls clocked a 1:32.55 to take first.

     In the 100 backstroke, Smythe returned to state with a runner-up 56.19. Breitweser took ninth in 1:03.36 and Simonson was 12th in 1:03.98 as the Panthers scored 31 points in that event. Kitzman won the section title in 53.84.

     The Panthers scored 16 points in the 100 breaststroke behind Hagan’s eighth-place time of 1:08.78 and Utke’s 1:11.76 for 12th place. Winning the section title was Jacobson in 1:00.86.

     Kurt Fritze (with a 53.01 split), Adolphson (57.27), Behrens (57.38) and Benson (54.74) ended the meet by placing seventh in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:42.40 for 24 points. Fergus Falls led the way with a 3:20.51.
