Shopko grand opening draws crowds to Perham
Beginning around 8 a.m. last Thursday, eager shoppers lined up outside the Perham Shopko, waiting for the doors to open at about 9 a.m.
The first 100 shoppers that brisk morning were each given $10 gift cards, and all shoppers throughout the weekend could sign up for prizes.
Shopko District Manager Joe Anderson came to Perham to host the grand opening celebration. He said Shopko is doubling its size, adding 130 more stores to its growing chain.
Shopko Hometown in Perham was part of the third round of the chain's store openings - one of 30 stores holding grand opening events on Sept. 13.
As part of the ceremony, Anderson presented Perham High School Principal Ehren Zimmerman a donation check for $2,500.
Perham Mayor Tim Meehl said, "Shopko coming to town will only make Perham stronger."
Minutes later, Meehl cut the ribbon, allowing customers to stream in the doors.
Afterward, Perham's Assistant Manager Randy Matthews said the grand opening went great.
There were "a lot of people," he said. "It was pretty exciting."
