Shogren, Stein birdie first playoff hole to claim Best Ball/Scramble title

Paul Shogren and Craig Stein birdied the first hole of a sudden-death playoff to defeat the defending champions and win the Two Man Best Ball/Scramble Tournament title at Headwaters Country Club Sunday.

Shogren and Stein were tied with defending champions Tom Jenkins and Kevin Krigbaum and the duo of Brent Jacobson and Sean Cheslock at 129 after 18 holes of best ball play Saturday and 18 holes of scramble play Sunday. Shogren and Stein birdied the No. 1 hole while the other two teams settled for par to win the title.

Geoff Martinson and Ryan Holte tied Don Cheerey and Dave Kelley for fourth place with 130s. Sharing sixth place at 131 were Clint Cornell and Adam McArthur and Eric Niskanen and Chris Curb. John Dailey and Bob Lind finished ninth in this 39-team field with a 133.

Shogren and Stein used birdies on No. 3, No. 4, No. 8, No. 11, No. 12 and No. 15 to share the lead after Saturday's best ball play with a 65. Jenkins and Krigbaum, who won this title the last four years, also shot a 65 with birdies on No. 4, No. 5, No. 9, No. 11, No. 12, No. 17 and No. 18.

Jacobson and Cheslock, who opened with a 68, made a charge on Sunday as birdies on No. 2, No. 3, No. 4, No. 5, No. 8, No. 9, No. 13, No. 15, No. 17 and No. 18 led to a 10-under par 61. Shogren and Stein used birdies on No. 1, No. 4, No. 7, No. 9, No. 11, No. 12, No. 16 and No. 18 for a 64. That duo bogeyed No. 5. Jenkins and Krigbaum also shot a 64 with birdies on No. 1, No. 2, No. 5, No. 8, No. 12, No. 13, No. 15 and No. 18. The defending champs had to settle for a bogey on No. 11.

Shogren and Stein then birdied the first hole of sudden death to win the title.

In the 39-team handicap division, Bob Jamison and Dave Kloss followed a net 63 on Saturday with a net 60 on Sunday to claim the title with a 123.

Mac McDowell and Steve Brown used a net 57 Sunday to share second place with a 125. Scott Hinners and Aaron Burnside also shot a 125.

Three teams - Mike Marjama and Gary Marjama, Ron Usher and Tim Usher, and Ken Pearson and Phil Parzino - tied for fourth place at 126. Sharing seventh place at 128 were three teams: Tom Marcussen and Matt Katzenmeyer, Dave Laine and Maury Hanson, and Paul Danielson and Chuck Driscoll.
