Seven Braves receive all-conference honors

Seniors Brandon Mickelson, Alex White and Brady Yrjo and junior Derek Pihlaja led the Menahga baseball team to runner-up honors in the Park Region Conference standings this spring.

Those four players highlighted this year's all-conference team. Mickelson and White were all-conference selections last season.

The Braves also had three all-conference honorable mention players: senior Mitch Melander and sophomores Sean Dormanen and Kasey Tyge.

Mickelson started in center field and had a .418 (28 for 67) batting average with three doubles, one triple, one home run, 13 RBI, 22 runs scored and 21 stolen bases in 20 games this season.

White started at shortstop and hit .348 (24 for 69) with three doubles, 21 runs, 12 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 22 games.

Yrjo, the starting first baseman, batted .304 (21 for 69) with two doubles, nine runs, 14 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 22 games.

Pihlaja went 5-2 with two saves in nine appearances on the mound. Pihlaja allowed 16 earned runs on 43 hits with 16 walks and 46 strikeouts for a 2.38 ERA. Pihlaja also batted .333 (21 for 63) with five doubles, seven runs, seven RBI and 10 stolen bases in 20 games.

Melander started 22 games in the outfield, batting .309 (21 for 68) with five doubles, 13 runs, 15 RBI and 10 stolen bases. Melander also had a 3-0 record and 2.19 ERA in 16 innings.

Dormanen played third base and hit .333 (23 for 69) with two doubles, 17 runs, 13 RBI and 11 stolen bases in 22 games. Dormanen also went 1-1 with one save and a 3.06 ERA in 16 innings.

Tyge led the pitching staff with 51 2/3 innings and posted a 6-2 record with two saves and a 2.17 ERA. Tyge allowed 16 earned runs on 44 hits and seven walks with 55 strikeouts. Tyge also hit .292 (21 for 72) with five doubles, two home runs, 10 runs and 14 RBI.

Menahga finished with an 11-3 record in conference play and a 16-6 overall mark. Bertha-Hewitt won the conference title with a 14-0 record. Trailing Menahga were Pillager at 9-5, Sebeka at 8-6, New York Mills and Parkers Prairie at 4-10, and Ottertail Central and Verndale at 3-11.

Rounding out the all-conference team were Ryan Denny, Dakota Aeling, Patrick Riewer and Austin Selvey of Bertha-Hewitt; Justin Ringler, Sebastian Stelk and Jordan Hunstad of Pillager; Alex Brockpahler, Brennon Brockpahler and Paul Funk of Sebeka; Jared Norton and Mason Roberts of New York Mills; Wes Green and Jeff Hammann of OTC; Tom Alton and Tyler Walsh of Parkers Prairie; and Matt Moenkedick and Clay Cottrell of Verndale.
