Second-half spurt, Reed's 27 points lead W-DC past Panthers

Christian Ridlon and Scott Wolff helped the Park Rapids boys basketball team battle Wadena-Deer Creek to a 26-26 tie at the half Friday night.

An 11-2 run to open the second half gave W-DC the lead for good as the Wolverines went on for a 61-45 Mid-State Conference victory at the Area High School gym.

A layup by Chris Goplerud, a jumper and layup off a steal by Kyle Goplerud, and a layup by Ridlon gave the Panthers an 8-1 lead with 14:22 to play in the first half.

Another layup by Ridlon kept Park Rapids in front 10-4 at the 12:52 mark before the Panthers went scoreless for the next 6:21. Two baskets apiece by Jordan Reed and Ben Birch sparked a 10-0 run as W-DC claimed a 14-10 lead with 7:12 remaining in the first half.

A jumper by Wolff at the 6:31 mark ended Park Rapids' scoring drought. Two more jumpers by Wolff, two inside baskets by Ridlon, and two free throws apiece by Ridlon and Andy Waller tied the game at 24-24 before a layup by Wolff tied the game at 26-26 at the half.

A 3-pointer by Ryan Redfield and a layup by Reed to open the second half gave W-DC a 32-26 advantage. Two free throws by Ridlon pulled the Panthers to within 32-28 with 14:55 to play, but another 3-pointer by Redfield and an inside basket by Reed gave the Wolverines a 37-28 lead with 13:54 remaining.

An inside basket by Chris Goplerud, a jumper by Waller and a jump shot by Ridlon kept the Panthers within 45-36 with 5:58 left. Layups by Reed, Josh Sherman and Cory Tumberg and a 3-pointer by Sherman gave W-DC its biggest lead of the game at 57-40 with 2:21 to go.

Chris Goplerud's three free throws and a layup by Tanner Otterness concluded the scoring for the Panthers, who missed 13 of 26 free throws in the game.

Reed finished with a game-high 27 points while Birch added 16 points to lead the Wolverines, who missed 22 of 36 free throws. Redfield added 10 points as W-DC improved to 5-4 in the conference and 8-11 overall.

Ridlon scored 17 points to lead the Panthers, who fell to 0-10 in the conference and 1-18 overall.
