Sebeka, Staples eliminate Legion from playoffs

  Sebeka and Staples eliminated the Park Rapids American Legion baseball team from the subdistrict playoffs.

     Park Rapids, the No. 1 seed, opened the double-elimination playoffs with a 5-1 win over No. 4 Blackduck Monday afternoon before being eliminated with an 8-4 loss to No. 2 Sebeka Monday night and a 4-1 loss to No. 3 Staples Wednesday afternoon.

     In the win over Blackduck, Drew Bade and Tyler McCollum combined on a three-hitter. Bade allowed one run on two hits with four walks and four strikeouts over four innings for the win while McCollum earned the save by allowing one hit and one walk with four strikeouts over the final three innings.

     Zach Eystad singled and scored on Kyle Goplerud’s single in the first. Cory Gartner and Paul Prenevost walked to lead off the second and scored on Rilee Johnson’s two-run single. Cody Brumbaugh and McCollum walked to lead off the sixth and scored on Prenevost’s RBI single and Johnson’s RBI grounder.

     Sebeka advanced to the championship game with an 8-4 win over the Legion. A walk to David Dirks, a double by Gartner and a single by Chris Goplerud produced two runs in the fourth while singles by Eystad and Kyle Goplerud and a double by Gartner produced the other two runs in the fifth.

     Gartner went 3 for 3 at the plate and took the loss on the mound.

     Staples scored unearned runs in the first and fourth innings before a two-run fifth helped eliminate the Legion from the playoffs.

     Park Rapids was held hitless through the first four innings before loading the bases in the fifth on a double by Chris Goplerud and walks to McCollum and Gartner. Josh Severtson followed with an RBI single before the Legion left the bases loaded.

     Singles by Dirks and Chris Goplerud put runners on second and third in the sixth, but the Legion couldn’t score.

     Kyle Goplerud took the loss, allowing four hits and six walks while striking out eight over five innings. Dirks struck out four and gave up one hit over the final two innings as the Legion fell to 10-3.
