Nevis' Bryon Schuldt and the Park Rapids girls cross-country team had impressive performances at last Saturday's Milaca Mega Meet.
Schuldt finished first in the Class A boys 5,000-meter race with a time of 16:35. Michael Unruh of Henry Sibley was second in 17:06. Nevis' Hunter Schroeder finished 17th overall with a time of 18:17. There were 129 runners who competed in the Class A race.
"Both Bryon and Hunter ran well," said Nevis head coach Tom Stambaugh. "This is a big win for Bryon as this is one of the best meets in Minnesota."
In the Class AA girls race, Lydia Lutz and Victoria Lutz finished sixth and seventh overall to lead Park Rapids to third place with 123 points. Holy Family Catholic won the Class AA title with 105 points while St. Cloud Cathedral was second with 116 points. Adrian (126 points), Fairmont (136 points) and Mora (159 points) followed in this 27-team meet. St. Cloud Cathedral (No. 11), Park Rapids (No. 8), Adrian (No. 3), Fairmont (No. 4) and Mora (No. 7) were all ranked in last week's state Class A poll.
Lydia Lutz finished the 4,000-meter course in 15:37 and Victoria Lutz followed in 15:39. Rounding out the Panthers' team score were Tiffany Deitchler (36th overall in 16:51), Sophie Shogren (42nd in 17:00) and Kaylee Hilmanowski (46th in 17:03).
"I really wasn't sure what to expect at Milaca," said Park Rapids head coach Kerry Johnson. "I had the girls look at Adrian, Mora and St. Cloud Cathedral before the race. I was very excited to beat two of those teams. There wasn't one team under 100 points, so that shows you how tough it was. It was an interesting race because it was so close."
In the boys Class AA race, Park Rapids finished 21st out of 28 teams with 566 points. Competing for the Panthers were Taylor Kimball (56th in 18:35), Jared Storseth (126th in 21:50), Kevin Merfeld (127th in 22:18), Matt Sullivan (128th in 23:24) and Josh Hays (129th in 25:30).
