Schissel to be inducted into Golf Hall of Fame
Park Rapids' Bob Schissel will be one of three 2010 inductees into the Minnesota High School Golf Coaches Hall of Fame.
The Minnesota High School Golf Coaches Association announced that Schissel, Jeff Nelson of Bemidji and Jim Roforth of Lake City will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in June. Schissel will be inducted at the state Class AA golf banquet at the Park Ballroom in New Prague on Tuesday, June 15.
Schissel coached the Park Rapids boys golf team from 1985-1995 and had three teams qualify for the state Class A tournament. The Panthers won three straight Region 8A titles in 1986, 1987 and 1988 and those teams finished fifth, third and eighth, respectively, at the state Class A tournament.
Schissel led the Panthers to eight straight District 29A titles from 1985-1992 and to Mid-State Conference titles in 1985, 1988 and 1992. Park Rapids also won the Mid-Minnesota Conference title in 1986 and 1993.
During his reign as the Panthers' head coach, five golfers - Steve Wermerskirchen, John Dailey, Tom Steele, Karl Carlson and Matt Berghuis - qualified as individuals for the state Class A tournament.
Schissel was named the Class A Coach of the Year in 1988, was named the Region 8A Coach of the Year in 1986, 1987 and 1988, and was named the Mid-State Conference Coach of the Year in 1985, 1988 and 1992.
In addition to coaching, Schissel served on the Minnesota Golf Coach Advisory Board, served as the Region 8A tournament manager for three years and helped set up the Academic All-State Awards for golf.
Schissel is still involved in golf as a junior golf instructor at Headwaters Country Club and an assistant coach for the Nevis high school golf programs.
