The Salvation Army’s annual Red Kettle campaign is continuing this weekend and totals are less than previous years, said Park Rapids organizer Lori Longworth.

There is one fewer weekend than most years between Thanksgiving and Christmas, which Longworth said could be attributing to the decrease.

This weekend all donations will be doubled. All donations made to Park Rapids Salvation Army today (Saturday), Dec. 21 will be doubled.

“No matter how you donate – at a kettle, online, by phone or in person – every dollar you give will be matched,” Longworth said. “This matching opportunity is both amazing and historic.”

The match is made possible by a small group of anonymous donors who pooled together $2 million worth of matching funds to get The Salvation Army’s Christmas Campaign back on track in Minnesota and North Dakota.  Kettle donations are down across the board in both states.

Donations were also matched Friday, Dec. 20.

“This is the largest two-day matching gift in Salvation Army history,” Longworth added. “Most importantly, every dollar we receive stays local and helps The Salvation Army provide critical services to our neighbors in need.”

Kettle donors are encouraged to snap pictures of themselves showing the peace sign – what The Salvation Army is calling “a sign of northland generosity” – and post them to social media using #double.

Bell ringers will be stationed at several locations in Park Rapids Saturday. They will continue ringing this weekend.

Funds received are used for local needs. The working poor are often recipients of some of the funding.

People are asked to consider donating as they figure out their end-of-the-year giving.

If someone doesn’t make it to a kettle, checks can be made out to “Salvation Army” Attn: Lori Longworth, 1415 1st Street E. Park Rapids, MN 56470.
