RENA MARIE VIZENOR MALONE
Rena Marie Vizenor Malone, Ojibwe name: Aandegiikwe (crow woman), 71, of Mahnomen and Sartell died Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at her home in Mahnomen.
Rena Marie Henry was born Jan. 5, 1943 at White Earth the daughter of Samuel G. and Marie J. (Burnette) Henry. She grew up and attended elementary school at Pine Point. She attended Park Rapids High School graduating in 1961.
She was united in marriage to Duane Vizenor Nov. 3, 1961 at Detroit Lakes. They relocated to San Francisco, Calif. where she began her career in the telephone industry, beginning with Pacific Bell Telephone Co. A few years later they returned to Minnesota living in Minneapolis and then Fridley, where they raised their two children. Rena and Duane were married for 19 years.
Rena worked for N.W. Bell where she held a variety of positions, including directory delivery, market control, and directory production manager. She retired from US West in 1990. She was a founding officer of the voice of many feathers, NW Bell's first American Indian Support Group. Rena received community service recognitions for her work in the organization.
In 1992, she went to work at the Shooting Star Casino in Mahnomen, where she served in various capacities including Employee Information, and Multi Media Specialist. She was employed by the casino for 14 years. It was at this time she met her partner of many years, the late Gary Holzhauer.
She was united in marriage to Dave Malone Dec. 28, 2012 at Sartell.
During her life she enjoyed pursuing many interests including, reading, traveling, fishing, bowling, antiquing and visiting relatives and friends.
She was a member of St. Theodore's Catholic Church in Ponsford. She volunteered for the Red Cross and The Courage Center, and she was a member of the Anoka Inter-Tribal Council. She also served in a leadership role as the board chairperson for the Anishinabe Council of Job Developers in Minneapolis from 1988 to 1990.
Rena was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, cousin, and friend. She graced our lives with love, stories, humor, care, and the color purple. Rena wrote: "Share with your family those things that mean the most. Most of all let them know you love them." We hold her amazing life and our everlasting love for her in our hearts.
She is survived by her husband, Dave Malone of Sartell; her son, Darrin Vizenor of Sartell; her daughter, Angela (Chad) Vizenor-Buchholz, grandson, Donnell Sheffeild all of Twin Valley; Dave Malone's children, Kathy Ann Johnson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Diane Malone of Tampa, Fla., David Malone of Pennsylvania; her brothers and sisters, William (Judy) Henry of Minneapolis, Joyce (Walter) Yellowhammer of Brooklyn Center, Paulette (Larry) Molin of Hampton, Va., Vicki (Roger) Sternberg of Detroit Lakes, Karen Fairbanks of Burlington, Ky., Margaret (Steve) Eischens of Detroit Lakes, Tim (Darlene) Fairbanks of Ogema, Pam (Ron) Fairbanks of Ponsford; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, James and Susan Burnette; father, Samuel Henry; mother, Marie Henry Fairbanks; brothers, Gordon Henry, Robert Fairbanks, Virgil Fairbanks, James Fairbanks; and sisters, Lavaun Henry and Angeletta Ross.
Funeral Mass: was held 1 p.m. Monday, July 28, at St. Theodore's Catholic Church in Ponsford.
Wake: started at 5 p.m. Sunday, July 27 at the New Pine Point School in Ponsford.
Interment: St. Theodore's Catholic Church Cemetery in Ponsford.
