POWER Up! in new year with community wellness challenge
Looking for a new year's resolution?
POWER Up! via the community wellness challenge.
St. Joseph's Area Health Services, the Center for Weight Management and community education - Park Rapids and Nevis - are partnering for a second year to promote good health, nutrition, exercise and positive attitudes.
The eight-week regimen that begins in January invites participants to set personal goals centered on "POWER tools" - Protein and Produce, Optimism, Water, Exercise and Resistance to grazing.
Kids, adults and seniors can flip on their "POWER switches" to achieve healthy lifestyle changes.
Nevis will host an info session at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 10 in the media center.
Park Rapids will host an informational kick-off meeting from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 17 in the Century cafetorium.
Both communities will offer $1,000 in prizes.
Participants completing weekly tracking sheets and submitting them to the community education offices via e-mail or in person will be entered in the drawings for the weekly prizes and a grand prize, which will be awarded at the end of the challenge.
Each week, POWER Up! members will set two goals. In the course of the eight weeks, participants may concentrate on a single POWER tool, a few or all.
The goals should be reasonable but challenging. At the end of each week, participants will evaluate their progress on a scale of one to five.
Family-oriented POWER Surge meetings will be held to boost motivation.
Park Rapids will hold Surge meetings from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Frank White board room, with experts on hand, Feb. 1 to discuss nutrition, Feb. 15 to address optimism and ownership and March 8 to tackle exercise and motivation.
Nevis meetings will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. in the school media center. Feb. 1, motivation will be the topic and Feb. 11, exercise is on the agenda.
Registration fees are $5 for individuals, $10 per family.
