The posse is made up of volunteers that live in or near the community. They meet once per month and train throughout the year. There are currently 16 members but they are looking for new, dedicated members to reach 25 total.

Uniforms are provided by the Hubbard County Sheriff’s Department, which also works with members. Deputy Jeff Stacey is the liaison responsible for training the posse.

Posse member Don Buerkley said members are combination of mounted (horseback), ATVs and foot patrol. They are looking for people to fill any of these positions. It’s not necessary to ride a horse.

The posse trains and meets at its headquarters north of Lake George regularly. This facility has corrals and an obstacle course for horses.

Volunteers attend many community events throughout the year including parades, fairs, shows, city and county activities and supports youth activities in the county. The posse is called out sometimes for search and rescue missions.

Recent events the posse was called to include the Governor’s Fishing Opener in 2013, the Green Valley Fire, Fourth of July parade, Taste of Dorset, Legends in Logging Days, Hubbard Sleigh Festival, the Park Rapids Fishing Derby and the Hubbard County Fair.

They have annual fundraisers during the year including a pork roast at Lake George and dinners at the Park Rapids American Legion.

The posse offers grants to high school graduates. The grant is $750 per year to a chosen applicant to continue studies in a criminal justice program.

Donnie Manz, of Park Rapids, received the 2013 grant and Tylor Farden, of Nevis, is the 2014 recipient.
