     Having a deep pitching staff continues to pay off for the Park Rapids baseball team.

     Andy Waller, Cory Gartner, Tyler McCollum, Kyle Goplerud, Drew Bade, Jordan McCollum and David Dirks all had solid outings as the Panthers won five games in five days last week.

     Waller and Gartner combined on a two-hitter as the Panthers defeated Pelican Rapids 13-3 in six innings last Monday. Tyler McCollum and Goplerud combined on a two-hitter in leading the Panthers to a 10-1 win at Thief River Falls last Tuesday. Bade and Gartner combined on an eight-hitter in Park Rapids’ 4-3 win over Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Thursday. Jordan McCollum and Dirks threw complete games as the Panthers swept a Mid-State Conference doubleheader at Wadena-Deer Creek Friday by scores of 12-2 in five innings and 12-4.

     Park Rapids entered the final week of the regular season with an 8-2 record in the conference and a 13-2 overall record.

Vikings’ errors aid Panthers’ win

     The Panthers combined nine hits with seven Pelican Rapids errors to start off an undefeated week.

     Four walks, two hit batters, an error, a single by Rilee Johnson and a double by Jordan McCollum led to six runs in the second inning as the Panthers claimed a 6-3 lead.

     After an RBI single by Zach Eystad in the third, two errors and singles by Dirks and Kody Walsh led to four more runs in the fourth.

     Two errors and a double by Bade produced the game-ending runs in the sixth.

     Dirks went 2 for 3 while Gartner picked up the win by allowing one hit and striking out eight in 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Panthers pound Prowlers

     The Panthers pounded out 15 hits in routing Thief River Falls.

     A single by Chris Goplerud and Johnson’s RBI double led to a run in the second before Paul Prenevost was hit by a pitch and scored in the third to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead.

     An eight-run sixth inning sealed the win. Chris Goplerud’s lead-off double, Kyle Goplerud’s RBI single, a single by Johnson, RBI singles by Prenevost and Gartner, a single by Chris Goplerud, an RBI double by Kyle Goplerud and three errors sparked that inning.

     Eystad went 3 for 3, Chris Goplerud went 3 for 4 with three runs scored, Kyle Goplerud went 2 for 3 and Johnson went 2 for 4 to lead the offense. Tyler McCollum allowed two hits and two unearned runs in six innings for the win.

Panthers edge Rebels

     Despite being held to only four hits, the Panthers were able to defeat D-G-F.

     Gartner had half of those hits and produced three runs to lead the way.

     In the second inning, Brad Eischens walked and Dirks reached on an error with two outs. Gartner followed with a two-run double to tie the game at 2-2.

     Eischens singled and scored on a wild pitch before Gartner lined a solo homer to give the Panthers a 4-2 lead in the fourth.

     The Rebels scored a run in the fifth, but Bade and Gartner struck out five of the final nine batters to preserve the win.

     Bade gave up eight hits while striking out eight over six innings for the win while Gartner earned the save.

Panthers sweep Wolverines

     Jordan McCollum and Dirks combined to allow only one earned run as the Panthers swept W-DC.

     In the first game, McCollum threw a one-hitter and was backed by a pair of home runs by Dirks as the Panthers prevailed via the 10-run rule.

     Kyle Goplerud’s RBI single in the third and a single and two-run homer by Dirks gave the Panthers a 3-1 lead in the fourth.

     The Panthers sent 13 batters to the plate and scored nine times in the fifth, highlighted by Dirks’ grand-slam homer. Chris Goplerud added a two-run double in that inning.

     Dirks went 2 for 3 with six RBI while Kyle Goplerud, Chris Goplerud and Josh Severtson also had two hits apiece for the Panthers.

     In the second game, Dirks recovered after giving up four runs in the first to lead the Panthers to the sweep.

     A double by Eystad, an RBI single by Gartner, a single by Bade, an RBI single by Johnson and two errors gave the Panthers a quick 4-0 lead in the first.

     After the Wolverines tied the game at 4-4, Eischens’ RBI single in the third proved to be the game-winning hit.

     Eischens followed with another RBI single in the fifth and had a two-run single in the sixth. Five errors helped the Panthers score four times in that inning. Three more W-DC errors led to the final two runs in the seventh.

     Eischens went 3 for 4 with four RBI while Eystad, Bade and Johnson chipped in two hits each. Dirks allowed eight hits in the complete-game win.
