Pirates win key section game in OT
Chase Brand’s natural hat trick helped the Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys hockey team rebound from a key Section 8A loss.
Cody Wardner’s goal in overtime lifted Crookston to a 3-2 win over the Panthers Thursday night at the Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena.
The Panthers rebounded from that loss with a 6-4 win at Lake of the Woods Friday night.
With the split, the Panthers are now 4-3-2 against section opponents and 12-4-3 overall.
Pirates prevail in overtime
For the second time this season, the Panthers rallied from two goals down to force overtime with Crookston.
In the first meeting of the season, the Panthers scored twice in the third period in a 3-3 tie at Crookston.
In the rematch Thursday night, the Panthers scored twice in the second period to force an extra period before the Pirates escaped with a key section win.
Brady Heppner scored on a 2-on-1 breakaway 2:54 into the game and Bobby Tiedeman followed with a power-play goal off a rebound with :01 remaining in the first period to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead.
The Panthers scored twice within a span of 1:17 to tie the game as Drew Bade scored a power-play goal with 24 seconds left in a major penalty and Matt DeLaHunt followed with a goal at the 11:19 mark. Kiefer Miller and Connor Kennedy received assists on Bade’s goal at the 10:02 mark while Noah MacPherson and Jamie Stewart assisted on DeLaHunt’s goal.
Crookston controlled the third period with a 15-3 advantage in shots, but Park Rapids goalie Cody Brumbaugh stopped all 15 shots to force overtime.
Park Rapids had two scoring chances at the start of overtime before Wardner scored the game-winner.
The Pirates, who had a 36-20 advantage in shots, snapped a seven-game losing streak to improve to 2-6-1 against section teams and 5-12-2 overall.
Brumbaugh finished with 33 saves.

Panthers defeat Lake of the Woods
A four-goal second period lifted the Panthers past Lake of the Woods.
MacPherson’s power-play goal at the 5:46 mark and goal at the 6:48 mark gave the Panthers a quick 2-0 lead. Kennedy and Brand assisted on MacPherson’s first goal while Miller set up MacPherson’s second goal.
Jaden Gustafson’s goal at the 8:51 mark and Blake Olson’s power-play goal at the 14:56 mark tied the game after the first period.
The Panthers took control by scoring four times on eight shots in the second period. Miller and Kennedy set up a power-play goal by Luke Jaeger at the 5:01 mark before Brand scored three straight goals for a 6-2 advantage. DeLaHunt had an assist on Brand’s first goal at the 7:03 mark, MacPherson assisted on Brand’s second goal at the 10:27 mark, and Stewart and Miller had assists on Brand’s power-play goal at the 16:42 mark.
Gustafson earned a hat trick with goals at the 7:16 and 16:46 marks of the third period.
Brumbaugh made 22 saves as the Panthers were outshot 26-24. LOW fell to 3-5-2 in section play and 5-12-2 overall.
