Pirates finish strong in win over Panthers
Despite firing twice as many shots on goal over the first two periods, it took a three-goal third period to help Crookston seal a 7-2 win over the Park Rapids-Menahga-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys hockey team Tuesday night at the Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena.
The Pirates used a 20-8 advantage in shots to claim a 2-1 lead after the first period before a 14-9 edge in shots led to a 4-2 lead after the second period. Crookston outshot the Panthers 14-5 in the third period to seal the victory in this battle of Section 8A teams.
Goals by Austin Proulx and Seth Heppner gave Crookston a 2-0 lead before Kyle Kanten scored off a rebound on a Sam Coborn shot at the 15:29 mark. Ian Johnson also had an assist on that goal.
Ryan Edevold scored midway through the second period to give the Pirates a 3-1 advantage before Coborn scored at the 10:26 mark. Johnson and Lucas Maves assisted on that goal.
Edevold answered 30 seconds later to give the Pirates a 4-2 cushion entering the final period before two goals by Brandon Larson and a goal by Kolton Walker in the third period sealed the win.
Kollin Erdman stopped 20 shots as Crookston improved to 2-0 against section opponents and 3-4-1 overall. Cody Brumbaugh finished with 41 saves as the Panthers, who went 0-for-5 on the power play, fell to 0-3 in section games and 2-4 overall.
