Pie contest sifts out cream of the crop
Twenty-one pies, across four categories, were entered in the 8th annual John Michael Lerma Pie Baking Contest and Auction at Beagle Books between 9 a.m. and noon Friday, July 4.
Each pie entry required a $5 entry fee. Pie judges included Tom Geraedts, Brad Schultz, and author Jeanne Cooney. Bob Wills and Megan Geraedts were on hand as “go-fers.” The judging was held in the dining room of 3rd Street Market.
Following eight seconds of silence in honor of John Michael Lerma, the auction for the pies (minus one slice!) was held at 3:30 on the stage in front of Pioneer Park on Main Street, thanks to the Park Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce. Pies sold for anywhere from $20 - $100 ($100 for the Coconut Macaroon Pie by Cheryl Gordon and the buyer was not related to Cheryl).
Between the pie entry money and the pie auction money, more than $1,000 was collected and donated to the Park Rapids Area Library.
