Perham relies on defense, C-I uses free throws to top Park Rapids girls

     Perham relied on defense while Crosby-Ironton relied on clutch free-throw shooting to record wins over the Park Rapids girls basketball team.

     Perham used a 15-2 run beginning late in the first half to spark a 57-35 win Thursday night at Perham while C-I hit five free throws down the stretch to seal a 61-57 Mid-State Conference victory Friday night at the Area High School gym.

     Those two losses against Section 8AA opponents dropped the Panthers to 1-6 in conference play, 3-5 against section teams and 5-9 overall.

Defense sparks Perham to win

     Perham closed the first half with an 11-1 run to take a 28-18 lead and Analea Erickson hit a pair of jumpers to start the second half as the Yellowjackets extended the advantage to 32-19 en route to the win.

     Katie Klein scored 10 of her team-high 16 points in the first half. No other player hit double figures as the Panthers were held to 29 percent shooting (14 for 48) for the game.

     Erickson scored 16 points, Ella Von Ruden had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Maria Rutten scored all 11 of her points in the second half to lead the Yellowjackets, who improved to 4-6 against section teams and 6-8 overall.

Rangers rally for win

     Crosby-Ironton faced a 52-50 deficit with 3:10 to play before outscoring the Panthers 11-5 down the stretch to pull off the win.

     Charity Ridlon hit a pair of 3-pointers and a pair of jumpers and Klein had a layup off a steal as the Panthers jumped out to a 12-6 lead with 11:36 to play in the first half.

     A basket off a rebound by Klein and two jumpers and an inside basket by Ridlon kept the Panthers in front 20-17 at the 6:27 mark before C-I used a layup off a steal by Lauren Peterson and a layup by Jami Nelson to take a 23-20 lead with 5:00 to go in the first half.

     Park Rapids responded with consecutive 3-pointers by Ridlon, Gabie Johnson and Hope Johnson for a 29-23 edge at the 3:05 mark before carrying a 29-25 lead into the break.

     Two baskets apiece by Meredith Silgen and Hallie Schmidt gave the Rangers a 34-29 lead with 15:01 to play. Two jumpers by Shannon Lundgren and a jumper and 3-pointer by Schmidt offset two jumpers by Ridlon and a jumper and 3-pointer by Klein as C-I led 47-42 with 9:50 remaining.

     A jumper by Ridlon, a basket off a rebound by Megan Grimes and a jumper by Hope Johnson gave the Panthers a 52-50 lead with 3:10 to go. Lundgren and Silgen scored inside to give C-I a 54-52 lead with 2:16 remaining. Peterson hit two free throws with 1:40 left before a layup by Schmidt made it 59-54 with :25 showing.

     After Ridlon hit three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt with :08 left to make it 59-56, Lundgren hit two free throws with :08 remaining to seal the win.

     Schmidt (17), Silgen (14), Lundgren (13) and Peterson (10) all hit double figures to lead a balanced attack for the Rangers, who improved to 3-3 in the conference, 4-1 against section teams and 8-6 overall.

     Ridlon finished with a game-high 29 points and added nine rebounds and three blocked shots to lead the Panthers. Grimes pulled down 12 rebounds while Klein and Bria Wolff had three assists each.
