Perham man who lost county race under investigation for voter registration fraud
The unsuccessful candidate for Hubbard County Attorney is under investigation for voter registration fraud.
Perham Attorney Nathaniel Welte and his wife Ann are the subjects of the probe.
Nathaniel Welte maintains he knows nothing of the investigation and was a legitimate Hubbard County resident when he mounted his campaign in the summer of 2010 to unseat incumbent Don Dearstyne.
Auditor Pam Heeren said all newly registered voters get a card in the mail after the election to check for voting irregularities in addresses.
In this case, the Weltes' card came back in the mail.
By state law, she said her office must forward all such returned registrations to the county attorney's office for investigation.
Dearstyne said the complaint was assigned to the Hubbard County sheriff's office for investigation because his office doesn't have an investigator.
If there is merit to pursuing charges, Dearstyne said his office would farm the case out to an outside county.
Welte changed his driver's license to the Hubbard County address but records show Ann Welte did not change hers.
