Perham defeats Panthers

Perham used nine first-place finishes to defeat the Park Rapids boys swimming team 113-70 in a Mid-State Conference meet Thursday night at the Area High School pool.

A runner-up 2:02.17 by Zach Lohmeier, Ryan McBrady, Sam Goebel and Kevin Merfeld in the 200-yard medley relay and a 1-2 showing by Goebel (in 2:07.02) and Zach Eystad (in 2:20.60) in the 200 freestyle kept the Panthers within 16-14 after the first two events.

Lohmeier (in 2:37.89) and Connor Smythe (in 2:46.49) went 2-3 in the 200 individual medley before Nick Belfiori won the 50 freestyle in 25.20 as Park Rapids stayed within 34-28.

But Perham went 1-2-3 in diving to start a string of six first-place finishes as the Yellowjackets pulled away.

McBrady finished second in the 100 butterfly in 1:12.83 while Belfiori (in 59.36) and Eystad (in 1:01.14) went 2-3 in the 100 freestyle. Merfeld followed with a runner-up 5:56.87 in the 500 freestyle for the Panthers.

Belfiori, McBrady, Smythe and Eystad clocked a runner-up 1:47.10 in the 200 freestyle relay before Goebel (in 1:08.31) and Merfeld (in 1:12.80) finished 2-3 in the 100 backstroke.

The Panthers ended the meet as McBrady's 1:14.39 and Tyler Booge's 1:17.39 led to a 1-2 showing in the 100 breaststroke and Belfiori, Lohmeier, Merfeld and Goebel teamed up for a runner-up 4:03.48 in the 400 freestyle relay.

Perham also won the junior varsity meet by an 83-43 margin. Leading the Panthers with winning times were Fred Stinar in the 100 backstroke (1:51.70) and Spencer Adolphson in the 100 breaststroke (1:29.41). Adding runner-up efforts were Matt Konshok, Adolphson, Stinar and Dillon Schroeder in the 200 medley relay (2:46.93); Jake Waggoner in the 200 freestyle (2:40.77); Konshok in the 100 backstroke (1:58.59); and Steve Osterman, Stinar, Adolphson and Waggoner in the 400 freestyle relay (5:20.99).

The Panthers traveled to Melrose for another dual meet Tuesday night.
