Perham basketball player improves; will be transferred to U of MN hospital
A 17-year-old who collapsed last week while playing a high school basketball game in western Minnesota is improving and will be moved to the University of Minnesota Medical Center in Minneapolis for specialized care.
The family of Zach Gabbard, of Perham, Minn., posted on his CaringBridge.org Web page Sunday. that that he began to show signs of responding to those around Saturday night. But the family noted Gabbard remains in critical condition.
The teen collapsed Thursday at a game at Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton High School. A defibrillator was used him before he was rushed to Sanford Medical Center in Fargo for heart surgery.
There was a prayer service for Gabbard on Sunday afternoon at Calvary Lutheran Church in Perham.
