High pressure moved back into Minnesota after scattered showers moved across the area on Tuesday. Park Rapids received .10" of rainfall. Some spots near the Fergus Falls area received nearly .25" of rainfall. With a clearing sky on Tuesday night, lows dipped into the 30s and 40s. Some spots in extreme northern Minnesota dropped into the 20s for morning lows. Crane Lake was the state low at 26 degrees Wednesday morning. That was no record as the record low for that city on this date is six degrees set in 2001.
Temperatures warmed-up into the upper 50s and low to mid 60s across most of western Minnesota on Wednesday. Park Rapids had a high of 63 degrees with plenty of sunshine. A few spots in northwestern Minnesota soared into the upper 60s. Hallock hit 68 degrees for the state high temperature.
By Wednesday night, we had a mostly clear sky with light winds. Morning low temperatures by Thursday morning dipped to 39 degrees in Park Rapids. A southwest wind helped to pull-in that warmer air. Highs on Thursday warmed up into the 70s. The winds were breezy out of the south at 10-20 mph out ahead of our next weather disturbance.
Rain chances returned late Thursday night into Friday. Some isolated thunderstorms were possible as a cold-front advanced through the state. Highs on Friday were cooler with upper 50s and lower 60s common across the region.
Things will cleared-out just in time for the fishing opener and for Mother's Day. Temperatures will be near 70 degrees both days with a blend of clouds and sun during the weekend! We really couldn't order a nicer weekend. By the way, be safe on area lakes if you are going fishing this weekend.
To all the moms, including my own, have a great Mother's Day!
On this date in 1977 Park Rapids had a record high of 88 degrees!
Most anglers believe that an overcast sky with light rain makes for better fishing as it makes fish "on the move."
