Pequot Lakes' defense keys 36-0 victory
Pequot Lakes relied on a balanced offensive attack to open the season with three wins.
The Patriots relied on that same formula to remain undefeated Friday night.
Nevin Greer threw for two touchdowns and rushed for two more and Logan Lange rushed for 128 yards in leading Pequot Lakes to a 36-0 Heart O'Lakes Conference and Section 8AAA football victory over Park Rapids Friday night at Pequot Lakes.
The win lifted Pequot Lakes, which is rated No. 3 in the latest state Class AAA poll, to 4-0 on the season while Park Rapids fell to 0-4.
Pequot Lakes capitalized on turnovers on Park Rapids' first two possessions to claim a quick 14-0 lead.
Greer opened the scoring with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Box with 10:54 to play in the first quarter and capped another scoring drive with a 3-yard TD plunge with 5:33 to go in the opening quarter. Brandon Tulenchik's 1-yard TD run with 34 seconds remaining pushed the Patriots' lead to 20-0 after the first quarter.
Pequot Lakes pushed its lead to 36-0 at the half when Greer ran in from 7 yards out with 6:27 to play in the second quarter and hit Box on a 25-yard scoring route with 1:07 remaining.
Colin Vaadeland's 40-yard run accounted for the majority of Park Rapids' 57 offensive yards in the first quarter while Kyle Kanten's 37-yard reception accounted for the majority of the Panthers' 54 yards in the second quarter. Pequot Lakes compiled 222 yards in the first half.
Park Rapids' only scoring threat in the second half was stopped at the Pequot Lakes 14. Forrest Drury's 9-yard run and two carries by Vaadeland for 14 yards led to a first down at the Patriots' 16 before Pequot Lakes' defense held
The Panthers' other two possessions in the second half resulted in punts. Park Rapids gained 43 yards in the third quarter and 0 yards in the fourth quarter.
Park Rapids' defense played better in the second half, allowing only 104 yards. Pequot Lakes fumbled on its first possession of the second half and punted on its next two possessions before running out the clock.
Greer completed 7 of 15 passes for 109 yards with Box catching four passes for 82 yards. Nolan Michaelson added 50 yards on eight carries.
Entering this game, Lange had rushed 55 times for 312 yards and three TDs, Michaelson had 189 yards on 25 carries with three TDs and Greer had 115 yards on 14 carries with two TDs. Greer also had 154 yards passing with two TDs, including a TD strike to Lange.
The Panthers were held to 148 yards in offense with Vaadeland gaining 60 yards on 12 carries and Johnson completing 5 of 12 passes for 66 yards. Vaadeland caught three passes for 23 yards for the Panthers, who turned the ball over three times and had 10 penalties.
"We made way too many mistakes, especially in the first half," said Park Rapids head coach Aaron Morris. "We came out with a lot more fire in the second half. We can play with them, but the kids have to believe that we can. We played too sloppy and you can't do that against a good team. Good teams capitalize on mistakes and that's what they did."
The Panthers cap off homecoming week by hosting Thief River Falls Friday night. Kickoff at Vern Weekley Field is set for 7 p.m.
