Pearson leads Cardinals past Panthers

Kelly Pearson's 17 kills and 18 digs led Staples-Motley to a 25-14, 21-25, 25-18, 25-16 Mid-State Conference victory over the Park Rapids volleyball team Thursday night at the Area High School gym.

A kill by Mady Vaudrin and an ace serve by Grace Bateman gave the Panthers a quick 3-0 lead in Set 1 before Staples-Motley used six service points by Marilyn Eagle Tail to build a 10-5 advantage. A pair of kills by Katelyn Hilmanowski pulled Park Rapids to within 11-10, but five service points by Claire Uhlman sparked a 14-4 run as the Cardinals won the opening set.

A block and ace serve by Vaudrin, a pair of kills by Hilmanowski, a tip by Alayna Young, a point off a dig by Ashley Thelen and a kill by Vaudrin provided the Panthers with an 18-15 advantage in Set 2. After S-M tied the set at 19-19, two kills by Megan Grimes and an ace serve by Hilmanowski evened the match.

A block by Vaudrin and a kill by Grimes gave the Panthers an 8-7 edge in Set 3, but the Cardinals went on a 14-6 run to claim a 21-14 advantage. A kill by Brighton Robbins and ace serves by Shania Johnson and Robbins made it 23-18 before Staples-Motley served out the set.

After kills by Vaudrin and Bailee Jerger and an ace serve by Thelen gave the Panthers a 6-2 edge, Kaitlin Spar and Ashley Jenniges served 10 points to give Staples-Motley a 14-8 advantage. A winning tip by Grimes and a kill by Bateman kept the Panthers within 20-13 before Staples-Motley closed out the match with a 5-3 run.

Justine Rittgers and Johnson served eight points each, Vaudrin and Grimes had four kills and four solo blocks each, and Thelen had 24 digs to lead the Panthers, who fell to 1-3 on the season.

Tappe leads Frazee to win

Alexis Tappe's 14 kills, four blocks and three ace serves led Frazee to a 25-9, 25-15, 27-25 win over the Panthers last Tuesday night at Frazee.

Vaudrin had five kills and four solo blocks, Grimes had four kills and three solo blocks, Thelen had seven digs and Bateman served three points for the Panthers.
