Paul Furey

Paul Martin Furey, 43, of Frazee, died Thursday, July 3, 2008 at his parents' home in Frazee, surrounded by his family. He had been treated for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma since February 2007.

Paul was born to Bernard and Katherine (Tuttle) Furey on Dec. 16, 1964 in Detroit Lakes. He grew up in Frazee and graduated from the Frazee-Vergas High School in 1984. He graduated from the Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio, in 1988 with a bachelor's degree in political science and minors in theology and human life issues. In 1992, he received his master's degree from the International Academy of Philosophy in the Principality of Liechtenstein, where he had lived for three years.

Paul was active here in the Lion of Judah Household, a Catholic Brotherhood. He taught at St. Thomas More High School in Rapid City, S.D., and had worked as a director of religious education at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm. Paul taught for a year at Immaculata College in West Chester, Pa. He moved back to Frazee in 2005 to work in sales with his brother, Patrick. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Frazee where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Paul enjoyed outdoor activities, travel and reading. He loved spending time with his family, including his nephews and nieces. He had friends from around the world. Paul loved his faith.

Surviving Paul are his parents, He is survived by his parents, Barney and Kay Furey of Frazee; brothers and sisters, Kathy Furey of St. Paul, Ann Doberstein, (Brent Gurtek) of Duluth, Minn., Tom (Mary) Furey of Minneapolis, Joe (Susan) Furey of Clearwater, Bernadette Furey of Frazee, Jim (Heather) Furey of Apple Valley, Pat (Sara) Furey of Frazee and Nick Furey of Frazee; 21 nieces and nephews; one grand niece; aunts and uncles; foster sister and brother, Rosemary (Martin) Gordon of Bayfield, Wis., and Thanh Nguyen of Worcester, Mass.; and his beloved golden retriever, Jake.

Memorials are preferred sent to the Gift of Life Transplant House in Rochester, Minn.

A mass of Christian burial was celebrated Tuesday, July 8, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frazee, with the Rev. Xavier Ilongo officiating. Burial was at Sacred Heart Cemetery.
