Park Rapids woman faces serious felony charges in July head-on crash

A Park Rapids woman with a history of impaired driving offenses faces four serious felonies in connection with a head-on crash east of Akeley July 1 that caused serious injuries to another Park Rapids woman.

Brenda Lee Olson, 42, was allegedly driving without headlights late at night and veered into opposing traffic on Highway 34 when her Pontiac Grand Prix struck a Plymouth Voyager van driven by 60-year-old Betty Dunker. Dunker was airlifted to a Twin Cities hospital for multiple fractures. The criminal complaint states she has undergone multiple surgeries and remains hospitalized.

Dunker's daughter Lori Eischens, 28, suffered a broken arm in the accident.

The State Patrol found "several alcoholic beverage container in the Olson vehicle," the complaint states.

Olson faces two charges of First Degree DWI, each punishable by a maximum of seven years in jail and/or a $14,000 fine upon conviction and two counts of Criminal Vehicular Homicide and Injury. Each of those charges carry a maximum of five years and/or a $10,000 fine upon conviction.

Olson's criminal history includes a DWI conviction in 2004 and two Implied Consent convictions in 2005, the complaint states.

The initial accident report indicated Olson was taken to St. Mary's Regional Health Center in Detroit Lakes with non-life-threatening injuries.
