Park Rapids woman charged with DWI after firefighters spot car in lake
Firefighters rushing to the scene of a rural Nevis fire late Monday night were startled to see a car in East Crooked Lake off County Road 2.
They called the Hubbard County Sheriff. They had too much on their hands already.
Their 11:20 p.m. call led to the arrest later of Julia Christen Kujawa, 20, of Park Rapids, on a drunken driving charge.
The vehicle was unoccupied and pulled out of the lake.
The State Patrol investigated.
Hubbard County Sheriff Frank Homer said Kujawa was southbound on County 2 when the "vehicle went in to the ditch on the west side, striking some mailboxes and then went across the road into the lake on the east side."
The State Patrol investigation led to the arrest of Kujawa at her home sometime later.
Kujawa was not injured in the crash, Homer said.
