Park Rapids senior earns Eagle Award
Paul Swanstrom has completed his Eagle Scout Award.
The Park Rapids Area High School senior has been a Boy Scout since first grade. He became a scout in 1999 as a Tiger Cub in Twin Valley. He transferred to Park Rapids Pack 58 in 2000 and became a Boy Scout in 2004.
Over the years he earned 25 merit badges. He became a member of the Order of the Arrow, the scouting honor society, in May 2008.
For his Eagle service project, Swanstrom decided to rebuild the benches on the dock at Camp Emmaus, a Lutheran Camp near Menahga.
He was a camper for several summers and the benches were unsafe.
"He found out about the possibility of the project through the camp and worked on it this fall," his mother, Sue Swanstrom said.
Composite wood was used so the benches should last for many years, his mother said.
"Paul was able to work on the benches indoors in the workshop this fall," Sue said. "There are two L-shaped benches that will attach to the dock."
Camp Emmaus is located just outside of Menahga. Emmaus surrounds Lake Morgan and also has shoreline on Stocking Lake.
In total, the project took 138 hours to complete. Paul enlisted the help of other Boy Scouts as well as his parents.
The benches will be installed this spring, Sue said.
A ceremony to celebrate his achievement will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Park Rapids.
