Park Rapids sends crew to Governor's Fishing Opener
A group from Park Rapids is attending this year's Governor's Fishing Opener this weekend on Lake Waconia in hopes of receiving news that Park Rapids will be the host in 2013.
Park Rapids applied to host the opener the year before but Waconia was chosen. Local representatives were encouraged to keep applying after last year's announcement.
Katie Magozzi, Park Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, who is attending this year's event, said Waconia had applied four times before being chosen.
The Governor's Fishing Opener has been in northern Minnesota for the past few years and the governor gave the impression he wanted to move it around the state. Waconia is located near the Twin Cities.
A pair of accomplished anglers from Waconia is hosting Governor Mark Dayton and Lt. Governor Yvonne Prettner Solon on Lake Waconia for the opener. Travis Frank will fish with Governor Dayton, and Matt Peters will fish with Lt. Governor Prettner Solon.
The Governor's Fishing Opener has been a tradition in Minnesota since 1948. The opener is an opportunity to highlight local fishing and other recreational activities, attractions and points of interest. The opener is also a kick-off celebration for the statewide summer tourism season. Travel and tourism generate $11.3 billion in leisure and hospitality gross sales in Minnesota annually.
The announcement of next year's host location for the opener will be announced today (Saturday) at the evening banquet.
The Enterprise is in touch with some of the Park Rapids attendees and will post an update on the governor's choice on the web at www.parkrapidsenterprise.com this weekend.
