Park Rapids Rotary Club tops fund raising goal
Fund raising efforts for the Park Rapids fireworks show exceeded expectations.
The goal was to raise $20,000 and so far $25,885 has come in.
Alan Zemek, Rotary Club member and fireworks fund raising coordinator said he hoped people would step up but with the economy, he wasn't sure what would happen.
"I was fairly confident," he said. "People come to expect this show and it means a lot to them."
Excess money for this year's show will go into a reserve fund for the 2010 show. Over the years, the reserve fund had been depleted and this year became critical.
A lot of people didn't know that no tax dollars are spent on the fireworks, Zemek said.
"In the past, a few businesses stepped up to pay for the show," he said. "This year, there were tons of individual donations of $20, $50, $100. It was really encouraging to see the community step up."
This Saturday, the Fourth of July fireworks will be lit once again in Heartland Park over Fish Hook River and "it will be better than ever," Zemek said.
