Park Rapids places third at Mid-State tennis meet
Karly Dickinson and Allie Girtz earned runner-up honors at No. 2 doubles to lead the Park Rapids girls tennis team to a third-place finish at Saturday's Mid-State Conference tournament at the Depot Courts and Century School courts.
Dickinson and Girtz, the No. 1 seed, lost to Staples-Motley's Caitlyn Robinson and Ashley Lisson in the title match. The Panthers had four third-place finishes in tallying 25 points. Staples-Motley had five individual champions and captured the conference title with 40 points while Pequot Lakes finished second in this seven-team tournament with 36 points.
Julia Renner at No. 2 singles and the No. 1 doubles team of Mary Kading and Alyssa Carlson lived up to their No. 3 seeds while Lydia Schaum also finished third at No. 4 singles. Schaum entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed.
Lexi Burlingame and Katie Walsh were seeded No. 2 and ended up placing second at No. 3 doubles.
Christina Smith was the No. 4 seed and finished fourth at No. 1 singles while Emily Klingenberg was seeded No. 4 and ended up finishing sixth at No. 3 singles as the Panthers took third at the conference tournament for the second year in a row.
Team scores: Staples-Motley 40, Pequot Lakes 36, Park Rapids 25, Detroit Lakes 14, Perham 14, Crosby-Ironton 12, Wadena-Deer Creek 6.
Panthers defeat NYM
The Panthers had to rally after dropping the first sets at No. 4 singles and No. 3 doubles to seal a 5-2 win over New York Mills Thursday.
Klingenberg won in straight sets at No. 3 singles while Kading and Carlson at No. 1 doubles and Dickinson and Girtz at No. 2 doubles were victorious in straight sets.
Schaum rallied for a three-set win at No. 4 singles and Walsh and Burlingame rallied for a win at No. 3 doubles as the Panthers improved to 5-6 in dual meets.
