Park Rapids man charged with criminal vehicular homicide
Andrew James Medved, 20, of 210 Park St. S. No. 1, Park Rapids has been charged in Becker County District Court with two counts of criminal vehicular homicide, both serious felonies.
In the early morning hours of April 29 Medved was allegedly the driver of a vehicle that crashed into a tree on Highway 34 in eastern Becker County, killing a passenger -- Grant Harmon Harvala, according to court records.
Harvala died at the scene after the eastbound vehicle went into the south ditch and hit a tree, ejecting him from the backseat.
Medved was pinned inside the vehicle and after being rescued was taken to a hospital in Fargo, where his blood alcohol level tested at .18 percent, more than twice the legal limit. In the hospital, he allegedly told authorities that he was too drunk to know whether he had been the driver of the vehicle.
Another passenger, Timothy Maher, was riding in the front seat and allegedly told investigators that Medved was driving at the time of the accident, which was witnessed by a state trooper, according to court records.
A summons was issued for Medved to appear in court on July 9.
