Park Rapids girls card lowest round since '81
When the season started, Walt Harrison expected the Park Rapids girls golf team to shoot under 400 on a consistent basis.
Harrison hadn't counted on this year's group to card the program's lowest round in nearly 30 years.
Led by career bests by Katie Kristofferson (88), Kirsten Erickson (93), Mindy Lawrence (94) and Mary Kading (95), the Panthers carded a 370 to finish in fourth place at Thursday's United North Central Invitational at Blueberry Pines. The 370 team score is the lowest round for the Panthers since the 1981 team carded a 355 to win the Section 8AA title and advance to state.
All four golfers excelled on the front side as Kristofferson shot a 43, Erickson and Kading carded 46s, and Lawrence had a 47. Allie Bade shot a 51 on the back side to just miss her career best with a 106.
"It was kind of a shock. Now we have to re-evaluate our goals and try to get down to 362," said Harrison. "When they came in, they all had smiles on their faces. When the worst score you count is a 95, I'll take that every time. The girls played really well. It was an excellent day."
Grand Rapids led the 11-team field with a 337 to edge Staples-Motley's 339. Detroit Lakes carded a 366 to edge the Panthers for third place. United North Central finished eighth with a 445.
