Park Rapids girls capitalize on fouls to defeat Warriors

Hitting clutch free throws down the stretch led the Park Rapids girls basketball team to a 53-51 win over Warroad Saturday afternoon at the Area High School gym.

Warroad led 38-30 with 9:14 to play when the Panthers used 10 trips to the free throw line to rally for the win.

A 3-pointer by Katie Klein started the comeback. Megan Grimes scored off a rebound, Klein hit two free throws, Bria Wolff scored inside and Gabie Johnson converted a three-point play as Park Rapids tied the game at 42-42 with 4:42 remaining.

A jumper and two free throws by Charity Ridlon gave the Panthers a 46-43 lead with 3:21 to go. A layup by Ridlon at the 1:21 mark and four free throws by Wolff in the final 1:02 sealed the win.

The Panthers also used a solid start to build a 26-24 lead at the half. A layup by Wolff, a jumper by Johnson, a layup by Grimes, jumpers by Ridlon and Wolff, a layup by Johnson, a basket off a rebound by Tori Lauderbaugh and a jumper by Wolff sparked the Panthers in the first half.

A layup by Lauderbaugh kept the Panthers in front 28-26 with 17:32 to play before Warroad went on a 12-2 run to claim a 38-30 lead. Klein's 3-pointer with 8:56 to play started the Panthers' comeback.

Wolff (15) and Ridlon (14) combined for 29 points to lead the Panthers, who improved to 3-10 on the season. Warroad fell to 10-5.

Wolverines defeat Panthers

Caitlin Volkmann scored 22 points and Emily Miron added 20 points in leading Wadena-Deer Creek to a 72-39 Mid-State Conference win over the Panthers Thursday night at Wadena.

Melissa Moenkedick added 14 points for the Wolverines, who improved to 3-2 in the conference and 10-6 overall.

Grimes (10) and Wolff (9) combined for 19 points for the Panthers, who fell to 0-6 in conference play.
