Park Rapids boys qualify five for state track meet in seven events

Going into Saturday’s Section 8A meet, Patrick Deegan thought the Park Rapids boys track and field team had the potential to send five individuals to the state Class A meet.

Following Saturday’s section meet at Mahnomen, the Panthers fulfilled that goal by qualifying five individuals for state in seven events.

The Panthers exceeded expectations by winning four events, placing second in three others and placing third in the team standings with 71 points. Roseau won the section title with 109 points while Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton claimed runner-up honors with 78 points. The third-place finish was the best for the Panthers since placing third in 2002.

Capturing section titles were sophomore Isaac Overmyer in the 1,600-meter run (in 4:47.97) and 3,200 run (in 10:28.95), junior Austin Carlson in the 400 dash (in 51.92), and Carlson, junior Kurt Fritze, senior Jake Waggoner and junior Bryce Brovitch in the 4 x 400 relay (in 3:37.03). This is the first Park Rapids relay team to advance to state since the 4 x 400 relay team qualified in 2002.

Also qualifying for state with runner-up finishes were Fritze in the 110 hurdles (in 16.78) and 300 hurdles (in 42.75) and Carlson in the 200 dash (in 24.08).

“I was surprised that we placed as high as we did as a team. I really didn’t start thinking about that until the end of the meet,” said Deegan. “I really wasn’t surprised how each individual did. I figured if we ran the way we were seeded, we would send five people to state.”

Also scoring points for the Panthers were the 4 x 800 relay team of Connor Farrell, Ben Baumgartner, Spencer Adolphson and Waggoner (fifth in 9:19.06) and Brovitch in the high jump (sixth at 5 feet, 7 inches).

Nevis junior Jordan Feder returned to state by winning the high jump by clearing 6 feet, 3 inches. Senior Josh Trosen just missed a state berth by placing third in the 3,200 run in 10:46.87, Feder took fourth in the 400 dash in 53.51 and Jake Keranen finished fifth in the discus with a throw of 120-3 as Nevis finished 11th with 25 points.

Going into state, Carlson is seeded No. 16 out of 16 qualifiers in the 200 and No. 14 out of 16 qualifiers in the 400. Fritze is seeded tied for No. 16 out of 17 qualifiers in the 110 hurdles and No. 16 out of 16 qualifiers in the 300 hurdles. Overmyer is seeded No. 15 out of 16 qualifiers in the 1,600 and No. 15 out of 16 qualifiers in the 3,200. The 4 x 400 relay team is seeded No. 15 out of 16 qualifiers. However, the Panthers competed in windy and cold conditions to qualify at the section meet.

Deegan is looking for the Panthers to excel once again and score some points at the state meet, which begins with preliminaries Friday afternoon at 3:30 at Hamline University in St. Paul.

“After looking at the seed times for state, we will have to run really well to make the finals,” said Deegan. “If we improve as much as we have during the season, I feel we have a good opportunity to get some to the finals.”
