Park Rapids boys hold off late rally by Sebeka

Park Rapids’ Sam Ness (32) looked to drive around Sebeka’s Thane Dailey during Thursday night’s game at the Area High School gym.

After building a 17-point lead early in the second half, the Panthers had to hit some clutch free throws down the stretch to hold off Sebeka in a 75-64 win Thursday night at the Area High School gym.

Tyler McCollum opened the game with a 3-pointer and Sebeka’s Matthew Lillquist countered with a layup and 3-pointer as the game was tied 5-5 at the 16:37 mark.

A jumper by Rilee Johnson, a pair of baskets off rebounds by Derek Porozinski, two 3-pointers by McCollum, two inside baskets by Porozinski and a layup off a steal by Jordan McCollum gave the Panthers a 23-13 lead with 10:28 to play in the first half. Tim Wieseler had a pair of layups for the Trojans during that stretch.

A layup by Jordan McCollum and jumper by Riley Massie kept the Panthers in front 27-17 at the 7:48 mark before a layup by Lillquist and a basket off a rebound by Kieler Skaro pulled Sebeka to within 27-21 with 5:06 to play in the opening half.

Three layups by Porozinski and a 3-pointer and basket off a rebound by Tyler McCollum gave the Panthers a 41-26 lead at the break. Thane Dailey hit a 3-pointer for the Trojans.

Layups by Jordan McCollum and Wyatt Derman, a three-point play Porozinski, a pair of layups and a three-point play by Jordan McCollum, a layup by Johnson, and a 3-pointer by Remington Hagan pushed the Panthers’ lead to 62-40 with 8:15 to play.

Sebeka followed with a 22-6 run to cut the gap to 68-62 with 1:51 to go. A layup by James Clark, a 3-pointer and putback by Lillquist, back-to-back 3-pointers by Dailey, inside baskets by Wieseler and Skaro and a jumper by Clark sparked the Trojans’ comeback.

But the Panthers preserved the lead as Hagan, Jordan McCollum and Porozinski combined to hit five free throws and Hunter Jewison scored inside to seal the win.

Porozinski led the Panthers with 24 points while Johnson had a double-double with 10 points and 16 rebounds. Jordan McCollum (14) and Tyler McCollum (13) also hit double figures while Tyler McCollum had seven assists and Johnson had six steals as Park Rapids improved to 15-9.

Wieseler scored 18 points and Lillquist added 12 points as Sebeka ended the regular season with a 17-game losing streak and 2-23 overall record.
