Patrick Deegan thought the Park Rapids boys track and field team had a good chance to win the Subsection 8-29A title at Walker Thursday.

Deegan didn't expect the Panthers to run away with their first subsection title since 2004.

The Panthers (who finished second last season with 134 points) scored points in every event Thursday, highlighted by four winning efforts and six runner-up finishes, to compile 165 points. Bagley/Fosston was a distant second with 110 points.

The 4 x 800-meter relay team of Sam Goebel, Ryan McBrady, Travis Deitchler and Taylor Kimball set the tone by winning the first event of the day in 9:01.51. Herman Stieng and Austin Carlson went 1-2 in the 400 dash with respective times of 51.83 and 52.86 before joining Brock Fritze and Forrest Drury for a 3:39.34 to win the 4 x 400 relay. Drury easily won the pole vault by clearing 12 feet.

Scott Wolff was the runner-up in three events by clocking a 19.62 in the 110 hurdles and a 45.29 in the 300 hurdles and soaring 37 feet, 2.25 inches in the triple jump. Also taking second were Stieng in the 100 dash in 12.24 and Carlson in the 200 dash in 24.26.

Cole Tretbar added a pair of third-place efforts with a distance of 40-4 in the shot put and 114-8.25 in the discus. Drury placed third in the 300 hurdles in 46.26 and McBrady finished third in the 800 run in 2:16.25.

"On paper we looked like we could do well and if the kids did their jobs we would win. Everything played out pretty close to what we expected. I was a little surprised at the margin. I figured it was going to be a lot closer. We scored points in a few unexpected areas, which probably helped the total. The key was just go out and improve on your time from the last meet. We had quite a few personal records at this meet. It is nice to see the kids step up in the most important meet up until this point," said Deegan. "This win is big for us. We have shown improvement for the last three years and hopefully it continues. Hopefully it will help recruiting more athletes to the program."

The Panthers qualified 12 individuals in 14 events for the Section 8A meet, which will be held Saturday at Park Rapids' Vern Weekley Field. Deegan is looking for his team to turn in another strong performance on their home field.

"Our goal at sections is to continue to reach personal records and medal as many athletes as possible," said Deegan. "Getting an individual to state would be nice."

Nevis also had a solid subsection meet by winning six events and placing fifth with 92 points.

Bryon Schuldt won the 1,600 run in 4:50.67 and the 3,200 run in 10:17.83 while Stephen Keezer, Matt Gustafson, Shawn Anglin and Sean Howes won the 4 x 200 relay in 1:35.04 and the 4 x 100 relay in 45.93.

Howes also won the 300 hurdles in 44.26 and Keezer won the 200 dash in 23.49. Gustafson added a runner-up 2:09.05 in the 800 run for the Tigers.

Team scores: Park Rapids 165, Bagley/Fosston 110, Northome-Kelliher/Blackduck 107, Mahnomen/Waubun 103, Nevis 92, Walker-Hackensack-Akeley 66, Clearbrook-Gonvick 27, Trek North 12.
