Park Rapids All School Reunion fast approaching
With less than a week away, the Park Rapids All School Reunion is coming together, with several new events for alumni to participate in.
Park Rapids All School Reunions have been every five years. The last one, in 2005, was held during Fourth of July weekend.
This year's reunion is under new leadership, with Dave "Lefty" Anderson chairing the event. He took over the responsibility from long-time organizers Rollie Bishop, Dave Konshok and Grace Wilson Olson.
Anderson, with the class of 1958, has a dedicated group helping him with planning as well.
New this year is the website, www.prhsreunion.com.
Alumni can sign up for the reunion online and purchase Park Rapids reunion apparel. Classmates have been able to keep in touch through the website about the reunion plans.
This year, the reunion button will be the key to all events. By purchasing a $10 button, a person can get into all the weekend's events. It can be purchased at registration. It is the top fundraiser for the event.
Those who register online still must register at the reunion.
An All School Reunion tent will be set up as the meeting place throughout the weekend at the Park Rapids American Legion. The tent will be open Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 4-5. This is a good place to mingle with friends and classmates before the reunion starts on Friday.
A message board will be placed at registration for people to leave notes to others about where and when to meet other classmates.
Starting Friday, registration will be at Century School from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Classes are encouraged to decorate their boats and pontoons Friday if they will be participating in Saturday's flotilla, a new event this year.
Friday evening meals and get-togethers are up to each individual class.
The American Legion will have its 9th Annual Backyard Bash from 4 to 8 p.m. Karaoke will be available at the American Legion and Bogey's starting at 8 p.m.
On Saturday, registration will continue at Century School from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., then move to the American Legion from 1 to 7 p.m.
The flotilla starts at 11 a.m. on the Fish Hook River. Classes plan to decorate boats and pontoons in Park Rapids Panther colors. A good place to view the parade is Heartland Park or Red Bridge Park, where the old swimming beach is.
Current and extracurricular staff will be at the Legion from 1 to 4 p.m. to meet with former athletes and students.
The Hubbard County Historical Society is sponsoring a pie and ice cream social on the lawn in front of the old courthouse, now home to the museum. The social runs from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.
At 2 p.m. the Historical Society, together with the Park Rapids Community Education, will conduct a guided bus tour of the "Old and New Park Rapids."
The ride is free with a reunion button. Without a button, the cost is $5 for adults and $2 for children under 15.
Anyone interested in singing with the alumni choir at the Sunday morning should attend a rehearsal Saturday. It is tentatively set for 3 p.m. More information will be available at registration.
The Sunday service will be held at the American Legion at 11 a.m. Songs will include "God Bless America" and "When the Saints Go Marching In." There will be choir practice prior to the service.
A "grill 'n' chill" event will take the place of the Sunday picnic this year.
It will be held at the American Legion Club after the parade. The Park Rapids Golf Boosters will be selling Pepsi products and water as a fundraiser.
Alumni are still encouraged to go to the website, www.prhsreunion.com.
