Park Avenue opens cosmetology school in Brainerd
Park Avenue School of Cosmetology will be adding a second location in Brainerd in March.
The Park Rapids site, now in its seventh year of operation, will continue as the main campus, owner Kristine Walsh said of the business decision to expand operations.
The former WorkForce Center on South Sixth Street (Highway 371) has undergone renovations to accommodate the new school.
The cosmetology schools offer less expensive haircuts and manicures and pedicures for consumers.
Students at the schools spend six weeks in theory and classroom work before heading out on the floor to meet clients, working under supervision. The student to educator ratio is 10 to one, with two educators on site.
Walsh stresses students learning in a salon environment, answering the phone, booking services, running the cash register and cleaning.
Students have 1,350 hours of work before taking state boards, graduating from the school with a total of 1,550 hours. Tuition is approximately $12,000.
The cosmetology school also offers advanced training to help students and graduates keep up with industry trends and new product lines.
Walsh is considering opening another school in Alexandria.
Upcoming start dates for Park Rapids classes are March 12 for cosmetology and March 26 for nail technicians.
The school is licensed by the board of Cosmetology Examiners and the Minnesota Office of Higher Education. It is accredited through the National Accrediting Commission for Cosmetology Arts and Sciences.
