Panthers win twice at Eveleth

After splitting close games with Henry Sibley and Greenway, the Park Rapids-Menahga-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys hockey team capped off the Eveleth-Gilbert tournament with a lopsided win over Kittson Central.

The Panthers opened the tournament with a 3-2 overtime loss to Henry Sibley last Tuesday before edging Greenway 2-1 last Wednesday. Park Rapids improved to 4-5 on the season with a 10-2 victory over Kittson Central on Thursday.

Sibley wins in overtime

Aiden Chapman's goal in overtime gave Sibley the win in the tournament opener.

Cole Chapman's shorthanded goal 23 seconds into the second period gave Sibley a 1-0 lead before goals by Sam Coborn and Ian Johnson put the Panthers in front. Levi Erickson and Johnson had assists on Coborn's goal at the 1:42 mark while Kyle Kanten set up Johnson at the 5:33 mark.

Troy Hoban's goal at the 6:53 mark of the third period tied the game before Aiden Chapman scored the game winner at the 6:17 mark in overtime.

Scott Smith made 38 saves for the Panthers, who failed to score on four power-play chances and were outshot 41-25 as Sibley improved to 4-5.

Panthers edge Greenway

Goalie Erikur Arnason kept Greenway in the game before the Panthers prevailed.

Arnason made 49 saves as the Panthers dominated play with a 51-15 advantage in shots on goal.

Coborn gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead just 24 seconds into the game before Greenway tied it on Jayden Gangl's power-play goal at the 10:43 mark.

Erickson and Johnson assisted on Kanten's power-play goal at the 10:04 mark of the second period for what proved to be the game-winning goal. The Panthers held a 21-5 edge in shots in the second period.

Smith stopped all six shots he faced in the third period to preserve the win. Smith finished with 14 saves for the Panthers, who went 1 for 6 on power-play opportunities.

Greenway, which went 1 for 5 on power plays, fell to 0-9.

Coborn's hat trick keys win

Coborn's two goals and two assists during a seven-goal second period sparked the Panthers past Kittson Central.

The Panthers claimed a 3-0 lead after the first period when Coborn scored 29 seconds into the game, Kanten scored at the 4:16 mark and Johnson tallied a shorthanded goal at the 6:43 mark. Benson Ringle, Kody Walsh and Cole Garoutte had assists in the opening period.

Park Rapids broke the game open by scoring seven times in the second period. Noah MacPherson and Erickson set up Coborn 18 seconds into the period. Erickson scored at the 4:19 mark, Zach Strandlie scored at the 5:38 mark and Kanten scored at the 9:19 mark to give the Panthers 7-1 lead. Coborn assisted on Erickson's goal and joined Johnson with assists on Kanten's goal. Coborn completed his hat track at the 10:40 mark with an assist from Lucas Maves. Benson Ringle set up Strandlie at the 11:54 mark while Kanten and Maves assisted on a goal by Johnson at the 13:25 mark to give Park Rapids a 10-1 edge.

Smith finished with 25 saves as the Panthers held a 44-27 edge in shots. Park Rapids failed to score on five power-play chances.

Kittson Central, which went 1 for 4 on the power play, fell to 4-7.
