Senior Victoria Lutz and sophomores Lydia Lutz, Shelby Pierce and Summer Ellefson qualified for the state Class A girls track and field meet in record fashion while eighth grader Mady Vaudrin advanced in impressive fashion at Saturday's Section 8A meet at Crookston.

Lydia Lutz, Pierce, Ellefson and Victoria Lutz won the 4 x 800-meter relay by breaking the section record with a time of 9:31.62. The old record of 9:33.80 was set by Roseau in 2001. That time also set a new school record. The Lutzs led that relay team to state the last two years while Pierce and Ellefson will be making their state debuts in that event.

Vaudrin followed with a runner-up time of 13.06 in the 100 dash to earn her first trip to the state meet.

Lydia Lutz then won the 1,600 run in 5:24.89 and Victoria Lutz followed by winning the 800 run in 2:19.38 as both runners also advanced to state in an individual event.

Those four winning performances led the Panthers to their first Section 8A team title since claiming back-to-back titles in 1994 and 1995. Park Rapids compiled 88.50 points to defeat Bagley/Fosston (77) and Warroad (76.50) for the top spot.

"I knew if the girls did what they could do, we'd come away with the section title," said Park Rapids head coach Corey Hill, whose team finished third last year after tying for fifth place in 2008. "The girls performed up to their potential against tough competition. We won it as a team. It was a total team effort. Winning the section title puts the stamp on an incredible season."

Even though the four state-qualifying efforts were the highlights of the meet, it took a total team effort to lead the Panthers to the section title.

In addition to the four winning times, the Panthers scored points in nine other events.

The 4 x 400 relay team of Ellefson, Lydia Lutz, Mandy Schirmers and Pierce capped off the meet by finishing second in 4:11.24. Ellefson and Pierce also contended for individual state berths as Ellefson placed third in the 400 dash in 1:01.98 and Pierce was third in the 800 run in 2:25.01.

Park Rapids also placed fourth in the other two relays as Shannon Taylor, Kyja Penning, Hannah Wolff and Vaudrin clocked a 1:52.79 in the 4 x 200 event while Taylor, Penning, Grace Bateman and Vaudrin clocked a 52.34 in the 4 x 100 race. Bateman also placed fourth in the 300 hurdles in 48.86 while Ellen Hoffman took fourth in the pole vault by clearing 8 feet, 7 inches.

Also scoring points for the Panthers were Nikki Knott in the shot put (sixth at 31-5.25), Sophie Shogren in the 800 run (sixth in 2:26.23), Bateman in the pole vault (seventh at 8-7), Kaylee Hilmanowski in the 3,200 run (seventh in 12:56.77) and Heather Goodwater in the 100 hurdles (eighth in 18.16).

"The day didn't start out as expected in the field events, but the girls stepped up and pulled through," said Hill. "You have to give credit to the kids. They performed well in one of the toughest sections in the state."

Nevis, which finished 11th with 28 points, had two relay teams finish third. The 4 x 100 relay team of Annessa Feder, Paige Walters, Maggie Lindow and Jessica Schunk clocked a 51.96 while Feder, Schunk, Walters and Riley Hanson clocked a 4:12.34 in the 4 x 400 relay. The 4 x 200 relay team of Feder, Hanson, Dianna Schuldt and Schunk took fifth in 1:52.88.

Hanson cleared 4-10 to finish fourth and Feder cleared 4-8 to tie for sixth place in the high jump. Walters took sixth in the 200 dash in 27.27 and Hanson was seventh in the 400 dash in 1:03.33 to round out Nevis' scoring.

Park Rapids' five state qualifiers will compete at the state Class A meet at Hamline University in St. Paul. Preliminaries in the 100 dash and 800 run will be held Friday afternoon with the finals in all four events set for Saturday starting at 3 p.m.

"It's exciting going into a state meet knowing the girls have the ability to perform better," said Hill. "I feel confident we'll do better against the best competition in the state. These girls are determined and prepared. It's going to be a lot of fun."
