Panthers' unbeaten streak is extended

     The Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys hockey team extended its undefeated streak to seven games in a row with a pair of wins on the road.


     The Panthers remained undefeated in Mid-State Conference play with a 4-2 win over Northern Lakes Thursday night.

     Park Rapids improved to 6-1-1 on the season with a 4-2 win at Willmar Saturday night.

Panthers defeat Lightning

     A three-goal third period sparked the Panthers past the Lightning at Breezy Point.

     Nick Reed’s first-period goal gave the Lightning a 1-0 lead before Luke Jaeger tied the game at the 5:05 mark of the second period. Connor Kennedy had an assist on that goal as the Panthers held a 16-4 advantage in shots.

     Goals by Kiefer Miller, Jaeger and Kennedy pushed the lead to 4-1 in the third period. Bailey Mueller assisted on Miller’s goal at the 3:03 mark, Ryan DeLaHunt and Miller had assists on Jaeger’s goal at the 4:59 mark, and Jaeger and Miller set up Kennedy’s goal at the 11:23 mark.

     Jake Hyytinen scored at the 14:07 mark to conclude the scoring as the Panthers held a 15-4 advantage in shots in the final period.

     Park Rapids finished with a 39-12 advantage in shots as goalie Cody Brumbaugh made 10 saves. The Panthers improved to 3-0 in Mid-State games.

     The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for Northern Lakes, which fell to 1-1 in the conference and 7-3 overall.

Brumbaugh leads win over Willmar

     Brumbaugh’s 38 saves led the Panthers past Willmar.

     Isaac Kobienia scored just 1:15 into the game and Willmar controlled the first period with a 15-3 advantage in shots. But Kennedy’s goal at the 7:36 mark tied the game at 1-1. Jamie Stewart assisted on that goal.

     Chase Brand and Dylan Weaver set up Noah MacPherson at the 4:11 mark of the second period to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead before Riley Grabow’s goal at the 14:06 mark tied the game at 2-2. Drew Bade’s power-play goal 1:23 later proved to be the game-winner as the Panthers carried a 3-2 lead into the final period. Miller and Kennedy assisted on Bade’s goal.

     Stewart and Matt DeLaHunt assisted on an insurance goal by Raul Garcia at the 13:34 mark to seal the win as the Panthers prevailed despite being outshot 40-20.

     The loss dropped Willmar to 4-4 on the season.
