Panthers, Tigers, Braves defeated in first playoff games

All five starters scored in double figures as Pequot Lakes opened the Section 8AA boys basketball tournament with a 73-37 win over Park Rapids Thursday night at Pequot Lakes.

The starting lineup of Michael Goerges, Jonas Dale, Matthew Michaelson, Kurtis Moody and Michael Ward combined for 35 points as Pequot Lakes claimed a 39-17 lead at the half.

A 3-pointer by Paul Dirks, two baskets by Mitch Long, and baskets by Dylan Walsh, Kevin Vaadeland, Jacob Swenson and Max Brown led the Panthers.

A pair of 3-pointers by Dale and 3-pointers by Goerges and Michaelson helped the Patriots outscore Park Rapids 34-20 in the second half.

Three baskets by Vaadeland, a 3-pointer and jumper by Dirks, two baskets by Walsh and four free throws by Brown led Park Rapids, which shot just 30 percent from the field and finished the game with 24 turnovers.

Moody (16), Michaelson (14), Goerges (12), Dale (12) and Ward (11) scored in double figures as Pequot Lakes, the No. 2 seed in the East half of the section, improved to 19-8 on the season.

Dirks, Walsh and Vaadeland combined for 24 points to lead Park Rapids, the No. 7 seed in the East which lost to Pequot Lakes by scores of 68-50 and 78-30 during the regular season. Vaadeland had five rebounds, Swenson had five steals, and Dirks and Walsh had three assists each as the Panthers end the season with a 6-20 record.

Upsala defeats Tigers

Chris Ripplinger scored 24 points and Isaac Schultz added 23 points in leading Upsala to a 78-64 victory over Nevis in a Section 5A playoff game Saturday night at Upsala.

Isaac Pelzer added 15 points for Upsala, the No. 4 seed in the West half of the section. The Cardinals led 46-30 at the half. Upsala improved to 15-8 on the year.

Nolan Toft scored 19 points and had seven rebounds while Dylan Stenberg added 17 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals for Nevis, the No. 5 seed. Mitch Rehkamp scored 11 points and had 12 rebounds while Hunter Schroeder had two assists and two steals as the Tigers ended the season with a 14-12 record.

"The game basically got away from us early as we were unable to stop their guards from driving into the paint," said Nevis head coach Scott Kramer. "We played well at times, but this is the time of the year when you need to play your best ball and we just couldn't get back close enough to make a game o fit. We made a few nice runs, but each time we did they had an answer."

Browerville edges Braves

Browerville opened the Section 5A tournament with a 67-60 victory over Menahga Thursday night at Browerville.

Derek Pihlaja led the Braves with 21 points. Luke Hendrickson added 12 points, seven rebounds and five steals while Kasey Tyge scored 10 points and had six assists.

Browerville, the No. 8 seed, was eliminated from the tournament with a 70-45 loss at No. 1 Sebeka Saturday night. Browerville ended the season with a 7-17 record.

Menahga, the No. 9 seed that lost to Browerville 59-47 during the regular season, ended the year with a 6-20 record.
