Panthers sweep Rangers, finish third in Mid-State
A sweep over Crosby-Ironton Monday helped the Park Rapids fastpitch softball team lock up third place in the Mid-State Conference standings.
The Panthers ended conference play with a 7-5 record after defeating C-I 12-1 in five innings and 7-2. Pequot Lakes won the conference title with a 12-0 record while Detroit Lakes finished second at 8-4. The Rangers finished at 0-12 and extended their conference losing streak to 60 games in a row. C-I fell to 3-15 on the season.
In the first game, the Panthers used a 16-hit attack to end this game early via the 10-run rule.
Singles by Shania Johnson, Ashley Thelen and Nakkita Buckanaga sparked a three-run second inning while singles by Lexi Burlingame and Olivia Vaaadeland produced another run in the third.
Singles by Buckanaga and Katie Just, an RBI double by Jerger and a single by Lauren Naeve set up a three-run home run by Burlingame as the Panthers led 9-1 in the fourth.
A double by Jerger, an RBI single by Naeve, a double by Burlingame and a two-run single by Vaadeland in the fifth ended the game.
Burlingame went 3 for 4 with three runs and three RBI and Vaadeland went 2 for 4 with three RBI to lead the Panthers. Vaadeland earned the win, allowing one run on five hits while striking out eight over four innings.
In the second game, Burlingame doubled and scored on an error in the first inning before another error and Jerger's RBI single gave the Panthers a 3-1 lead in the second.
Johnson doubled and scored on an error in the third before singles by Vaadeland, Johnson and Caitlan Isaacson and an error led to the final three runs in the fifth.
Jerger went 2 for 4 and Johnson went 2 for 3 to lead the Panthers' offense, which had nine hits in the game. Buckanaga went the distance, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out nine.
Prowlers edge Panthers
RBI triples by Sabrina Okeson and Brittany Kasprick sparked Thief River Falls to an 8-4 win over the Panthers on Tuesday.
Okeson's two-run triple in the third and Kasprick's RBI triple gave the Prowlers a 6-3 lead in the fifth. TRF sealed the win with two unearned runs in the sixth.
Buckanaga's RBI single produced Park Rapids' first run in the second while Burlingame doubled and scored on Vaadeland's home run in the third. Buckanaga singled and scored on Naeve's RBI double in the sixth to conclude the scoring.
Johnson went 3 for 4, Buckanaga went 3 for 3, and Burlingame and Vaadeland had two hits each to pace the Panthers' 11-hit attack. Vaadeland took the loss, allowing five earned runs on 11 hits.
The Panthers fell to 11-7 while Thief River Falls improved to 9-8.
