Producing runs in the late innings against Pequot Lakes and in the first inning against Staples-Motley helped the Park Rapids baseball team win three of four Mid-State Conference games.

The Panthers scored 11 runs in the late innings to sweep Pequot Lakes by scores of 9-7 and 11-8 last Thursday.

After dropping a 6-1 decision to Staples-Motley in the first game Tuesday, the Panthers scored five runs in the first inning of the second game to earn a split with an 8-6 victory.

Park Rapids improved to 5-1 in Mid-State play and 7-1 overall.

Panthers sweep Patriots

Two late rallies enabled the Panthers to sweep a pair of road games at Pequot Lakes.

In the first game, the Panthers trailed 7-3 before rallying with a five-run sixth inning behind a two-run single by Drew Bade and RBI singles by Chris Goplerud and Brad Eischens.

Eystad went 4 for 5, Bade went 2 for 4 with three RBI, Goplerud went 2 for 4, Eischens went 2 for 4 and Josh Severtson scored three runs to lead the Panthers’ offense. Andy Waller picked up the win in relief while Jordan McCollum earned the save.

In the second game, the Panthers scored four times in the sixth inning and twice in the seventh to break open a 5-5 tie for the sweep.

Chris Goplerud’s two-run homer and Jordan McCollum's RBI single gave the Panthers a 9-5 lead in the sixth before David Dirks’ two-run single sealed the win in the seventh.

Jordan McCollum went 3 for 3 and scored three times while Dirks, Bade and Kyle Goplerud added two hits each to pace the Panthers’ 14-hit attack. Kyle Goplerud earned the win in relief.

Pequot Lakes finished with only two hits, but drew 15 walks in falling to 0-2 in the conference and 0-4 overall.

Panthers split with Cardinals

After being held to only three hits in the opener, the Panthers capitalized on some Staples-Motley errors and used some timely hitting to salvage a split.

In the first game, Kyle Goplerud walked, advanced to third on Eischens’ double and scored on a wild pitch in the second inning to account for Park Rapids’ lone run.

Dirks started and took the loss.

Three Staples-Motley errors helped the Panthers score five runs in the first inning to spark the win in the second game.

Eystad’s double, two errors on strikeouts, Chris Goplerud’s two-run double and Kyle Goplerud’s RBI single gave the Panthers a 5-2 lead in the first.

Bade’s RBI single in the second and run-scoring grounder in the fourth and Cory Gartner’s RBI single in the fifth pushed the Panthers’ lead to 8-2.

The Cardinals scored four times in the seventh before Kyle Goplerud retired the side to preserve the win for Jordan McCollum.

The split left Staples-Motley with a 5-3 record in the conference and 5-4 overall mark.
