Panthers sweep pair from Staples
Pounding out 24 hits and allowing only two earned runs led the Park Rapids fastpitch softball team to a Mid-State Conference doubleheader sweep at Staples-Motley Friday.
The Panthers used a five-run second inning to spark a 7-1 win in the first game and combined 14 hits with seven Staples-Motley errors for a 17-5 victory in the second game.
In the first game, a bases-clearing double by Brie Warne and an RBI double by Leeza Tostenson in the second inning sparked the Panthers to the win.
A double by Danielle Dent and RBI singles by Maria Goetz and Jenny Palm led to the final two runs in the seventh.
Palm went 3 for 4 to pace Park Rapids' eight-hit attack. Warne allowed three hits and struck out 10 for the win.
The Panthers scored multiple runs in each of the first four innings to complete the sweep by winning via the 10-run rule.
Cady Clinton's two-run single highlighted a three-run first inning. RBI singles by Warne and Dent and a two-run single by Goetz sparked a five-run second inning. An RBI double by Palm and a two-run double by Goetz were the key hits in a six-run third inning. A double by Dent and an RBI single by Clinton led to the final three runs in the fourth.
Goetz went 3 for 4 with five RBI, Clinton went 3 for 4 with three runs scored and three RBI, and Warne, Palm and Dent had two hits each as Park Rapids pounded out 14 hits. Clinton went the distance for the win, allowing six hits and one earned run.
The sweep lifted the Panthers to 7-1 in conference play and 8-4 overall.
Prowlers defeat Panthers
Thief River Falls relied on a 16-hit attack to defeat the Panthers 11-2 Thursday.
Leeza Tostenson went 3 for 4 to lead the Panthers.
