Panthers strike down Lightning
For the second time this season, Noah MacPherson and Connor Kennedy scored two goals apiece as the Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys hockey team picked up its second victory of the season.
Kennedy scored twice in the second period and MacPherson sealed the win with two goals in the third period as the Panthers defeated Northern Lakes 5-1 Thursday night at the Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena in a Mid-State Conference clash.
Jamie Stewart set up Luke Jaeger at the 13:55 mark of the first period to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. Park Rapids held a 13-4 advantage in shots in the opening period.
The Panthers fired 22 shots on goal in the second period and used goals by Kennedy at the 4:12 mark and 7:09 mark to take a 3-0 lead. Drew Bade and Jaeger assisted on Kennedy's first goal while Ian Johnson was credited with an assist on Kennedy's second goal.
In the third period, MacPherson scored at the 3:39 mark to give the Panthers a 4-0 lead before Kennedy set up MacPherson at the 14:48 mark for the game's final goal.
Goalie Cody Brumbaugh made 24 saves for the win as the Panthers finished with a 43-25 edge in shots.
The win gave Park Rapids a 2-1 record in the conference and 2-3 overall mark while the Lightning fell to 0-3 in conference games and 4-5 overall.
