Panthers start, end strong to defeat Northern Lakes

Frank Moren's three assists and Cody Brumbaugh's 37 saves led the Park Rapids-Menahga-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys hockey team to a 6-3 Mid-State Conference victory over Northern Lakes at Breezy Point Tuesday night.

The Panthers jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first period behind Brumbaugh's 18 saves. Noah MacPherson opened the scoring 1:09 into the game on an assist from Sam Coborn. Ian Johnson and Moren set up Coborn for a power-play goal at the 8:41 mark before Moren assisted on a goal by Zach Strandlie at the 10:28 mark. Connor Chambers scored Northern Lake's goal.

Northern Lakes used a goal by Jacob Travis and a power-play goal by Andy Sorben to tie the game at 3-3 after the second period. The Lightning held a 12-8 edge in shots in that period.

Park Rapids dominated the third period with a 21-9 advantage in shots. Coborn and Moren set up MacPherson for what proved to be the game-winning goal at the 7:45 mark. Zach O'Hern and Strandlie were credited with assists on Kody Walsh's goal at the 9:16 mark before Coborn scored an empty-net goal with 1:06 to play.

Joey Bergquist finished with 40 saves for the Lightning.

The win lifted Park Rapids to 3-1-1 in conference play and 8-7-1 overall. Northern Lakes fell to 1-2-1 in conference games and 7-7-1 overall. Detroit Lakes leads the conference standings with a 4-0 record.
